There is no single “Florida number” of hours to run a pool pump. There is August, and there is January, and they are not the same job. The Florida Climate Center’s 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport put August at a 91.6°F average high, an 82.6°F mean, 7.69 inches of rain, and 547 cooling-degree days. January sits at a 71.8°F high, a 60.6°F mean, 2.48 inches of rain, and 46 cooling-degree days. More heat, more bathers, more wet-season debris, and more chlorine demand all argue for more circulation in late summer — not for copying a January timer into July.

How many hours should a pool pump run per day in Florida?

Start with turnover, not with a neighbor’s rumor. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Measure Guideline: Replacing Single-Speed Pool Pumps with Variable Speed Pumps for Energy Savings walks through the arithmetic. A typical example in that guide is a 25,000-gallon residential pool. The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, as cited there, suggests a pump be capable of turning the volume over twice in 24 hours. In the field, the guide says the actual turnover can be slower when conditions permit, and it sets a practical target: turn the pool volume over at least once every 24 hours. It also says turnover time should not be less than six hours during normal operation.

Worked example from that same DOE page: at 66 gallons per minute, 25,000 gallons turns over in about 6.3 hours. Two turnovers would be about 12.6 hours on that single-speed setup. A variable-speed pump at 22 gpm needs about 19 hours for one turnover — and uses far less energy doing it, because pump power drops steeply as speed drops. That is why “hours” on a variable-speed pump are not comparable to “hours” on an old single-speed motor. Longer can still be cheaper.

Your Winter Garden rectangle is not 25,000 gallons unless it is. Measure or estimate volume, then ask what flow the pad actually makes. A dirty filter, a clogged impeller, or a skimmer starved for water all fake a schedule. Hours on the timer are not gallons through the filter.

Why does August need more circulation than January?

Warm water, a wet-season sky, and people in the pool. CDC Healthy Swimming lists sunlight and bather waste among the things that reduce chlorine. August in Orange and Lake counties supplies both, plus rain that dilutes the residual and dumps organics off the screen. If the pump is off for 18 hours in that weather, you are filtering on a hobby schedule. January’s lighter rain and cooler water slow algae and stretch a residual. You can often ease extra turnovers then. You should not park the pump.

Salt systems add a plumbing constraint. Many chlorinators need a minimum flow to make chlorine. A variable-speed pump loafing at a very low RPM may circulate without making sanitizer. That is a salt pool care conversation, not a reason to hammer a single-speed motor 24 hours a day.

Single-speed vs variable-speed: does run time change?

Yes. DOE’s example is the point: a variable-speed pump is designed to run longer at a lower flow and still turn the pool over once a day, using a fraction of the wattage. A single-speed pump that already turns the pool over in six hours does not automatically need to run 20. Extra hours on a loud, hot single-speed motor in an August equipment pad are heat and kilowatts. Extra hours on a low RPM variable-speed setting are often the efficient way to keep chemistry mixed and the surface skimming.

Should I run the pump during afternoon thunderstorms?

People first. The National Weather Service lightning safety page is not optional around a Florida pool: lightning kills people in the United States every year, most often in summer, and the standing advice is to get inside when thunder is in the area. Do not “watch the baskets” from the deck while a cell is on top of Hamlin.

Equipment second. A named storm or a long outage is a different protocol — breaker off, do not drain, debris by hand, then shock — and that is a separate article. For an ordinary wet-season afternoon, many owners leave a healthy system circulating if power is clean and the baskets are not packing with oak. If the area is under severe weather, or you are leaving the house, cutting the pool breaker is the conservative move. CDC still wants a residual in the water. Circulation is how you keep it mixed. Neither goal is worth standing outside in lightning.

What if I cut hours to save on the electric bill?

Cutting January hours is often reasonable. Cutting August hours because the January bill looked good is how green pool recovery starts. DOE’s own guide says pools with high debris or bather load may need additional turnovers to keep water quality. That sentence was written for energy savers, not for chemical sales.
