Why west Orlando pools turn green after summer storms

NOAA’s Orlando normals put more than half of the year’s rain in June–September. Combined with warm water and fertilizer, that is why a west Orlando pool goes green when chlorine hits zero. UF/IFAS, CDC, and 64E-9 citations included.

West Orlando does not have a “pool season.” It has a wet season. If you only remember one climate number, use the NOAA / NCEI 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport (station USW00012815, published by the Florida Climate Center): 51.45 inches of rain a year, with 8.05 inches in June, 7.46 in July, 7.69 in August, and 6.37 in September. November, by contrast, is 1.79 inches. That is not a vibe. That is why a Winter Garden pool that looked fine on a Monday in July is lime-green by Friday if the pump sat through two afternoon cells.

What rain actually does to a backyard pool

Rainwater is not “free distilled top-off.” It arrives with a pH typically in the mid-5s, with whatever it washed off the screen, the oak, and the new sod. Three things happen at once:

  • Dilution. A 2-inch rain on a 15,000-gallon pool is not a rounding error. Free chlorine that was 3 ppm can be 2 ppm or lower before anyone opens the app. Combined with organic load (leaves, pollen, bird droppings, mulch), the residual can hit zero overnight.
  • pH and alkalinity shift. Acidic rain pulls pH down; then the pool’s buffers fight back. You cannot “eye” this. You test.
  • Nutrients. Fertilizer from a Horizon West lawn or a Stoneybrook West fairway does not stay on the turf when the gutter dumps across the deck. Phosphate is algae food. UF/IFAS work on Florida inland waters keeps repeating the same drivers: warm water plus nutrients favor blooms, including cyanobacteria.

Karl Havens’s UF/IFAS / Florida Sea Grant fact sheet “The Future of Harmful Algal Blooms in Florida Inland and Coastal Waters” (EDIS SG153) states that blooms are stimulated by excessive nutrients and by warm water, and that when nutrient levels are already high, even a few degrees of extra warmth can cause exponential increases in HAB-forming algae. Your screened lanai is not Lake Apopka. The lesson still holds: warm, nutrient-rich, poorly sanitized water is where photosynthetic microbes win.

Chlorine floors that actually mean something

Residential pools in Orange and Lake counties are not inspected like a city kiddie pool. We still steal the honest numbers from people who are. The CDC Healthy Swimming program and the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) tell operators to keep a minimum of 1.0 ppm free chlorine without cyanuric acid and 2.0 ppm when cyanuric acid is present. Florida Administrative Code 64E-9.004 keeps public conventional pools at pH 7.0–7.8, free chlorine 1–10 mg/L, and cyanuric acid at a 100 mg/L maximum with 40 mg/L recommended.

Those figures exist because chlorine that tests “fine” next to a trichlor puck can still be too slow. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) protects chlorine from UV — useful under a Central Florida sky — and it also lengthens the time chlorine needs to inactivate germs. CDC fecal-incident guidance even tells public operators to get CYA down to 1–15 ppm before they bother hyperchlorinating for Cryptosporidium. You are not running a waterpark. You are running a 14,000-gallon hole that children use after a Hamlin thunderstorm. If CYA is 80 because someone “just added pucks all summer,” a polite 3 ppm shock will not clear green water. That is why green pool recovery is a sequence, not a capful.

Storm week is not the same as hurricane week

NOAA’s National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic hurricane season as 1 June through 30 November, with the climatological peak around 10 September. Most west Orlando “green pool” calls we see are not named storms. They are ordinary wet-season cells plus a tripped breaker. Named storms add debris, outages measured in days, and the temptation to drain.

Do not drain. UF/IFAS Closing Your Seasonal Home (FCS3154/HE887) tells Florida owners that untreated water grows algae and that an empty shell can crack in the sun or from groundwater pressure after heavy rain. UF/IFAS Extension Indian River County’s Pools and Hurricanes article points back at that same publication. UF/IFAS Extension Orange County’s hurricane-season note repeats the Florida Swimming Pool Association practice: keep the water in the pool, turn the equipment off at the breaker, and shock so incoming organic load meets a residual. We will not tell you to store lawn chairs in the deep end.

If you are already gone, that is the vacant and snowbird route: chemistry every 7–10 days, which is the interval UF/IFAS wrote down, not a slogan we invented.

What a recovery visit is, in this climate

Brush first. Test. Balance pH so chlorine can work. Raise free chlorine and hold it while the filter runs. Rinse the cartridge when pressure climbs — Windermere oak tassels and Waterleigh mulch will cake a filter in a day. Come back. One visit after a hurricane week is a start. CDC is not an algae agency, but Healthy Swimming’s insistence on a measured residual is the right instinct: color is not a test kit.

Geography still matters. A treeless Hamlin lot sees more UV than a Windermere oak lot. Clermont and Minneola are Lake County ridge towns; they still get the wet season, plus wind across the hill. Stoneybrook West fairways add fertilizer. None of that is a reason to skip the test kit. Is a green pool after rain always algae?

Usually planktonic green algae or a mix. Black specks on pebble may be cyanobacteria in the finish. Either way the first tools are a test kit and a brush, not a drain. See green pool recovery.

Should I dump in extra pucks before a storm?

Pucks add chlorine and cyanuric acid. After a few summers you slow the chlorine down. Unstabilized liquid or cal-hypo is the usual way to raise free chlorine without stacking CYA. We are not selling a brand.

Does a salt system ignore rain?

No. Rain dilutes salt and chlorine. A cell that is off during an outage produces nothing. Read salt pool care and the companion Advice post on stabilizer.
