Saltwater pools in west Orlando: stabilizer, sun, and weekly care

A salt cell still makes chlorine. Cyanuric acid, pH climb, and NOAA-level UV are why Horizon West and Windermere salt pools still need weekly testing. CDC MAHC and UF/IFAS citations included.

A saltwater pool in west Orlando is a chlorine generator with extra homework. The cell splits dissolved salt into hypochlorous acid. It does not create a separate branch of chemistry, and it does not cancel NOAA’s sun. If you converted in Windermere because a salesperson said “no more chlorine,” you still have chlorine. You just make it on the pad instead of pouring it from a jug — until the cell scales, the salt is diluted by an August cell, or cyanuric acid from leftover pucks makes the residual too slow to matter.

What the cell is actually doing

Salt in the water (often around 3,000 ppm, never ocean water) passes over plates. The box on the wall makes chlorine. By-product behavior that weekly techs in this metro actually see:

  • pH climbs. Acid is a routine weekly adjustment, not a scandal.
  • Scale on plates. Central Florida fill water carries calcium. Dry-season evaporation (NOAA normals put November at 1.79 inches at MCO versus June at 8.05) concentrates minerals. A scaled cell makes less chlorine while the display still looks proud.
  • Salt drift. Rain dilutes. Splash-out and backwashing remove salt. Adding bags without a test is how you overshoot.

None of that replaces a free-chlorine reading at the far steps. The CDC Model Aquatic Health Code still wants a minimum free chlorine of 1.0 ppm without stabilizer and 2.0 ppm with cyanuric acid in the water. Florida 64E-9.004 still caps CYA at 100 mg/L for public pools and recommends 40. Your HOA is not the health department. Your kids still swim in the water.

Stabilizer is the quiet failure on salt conversions

Many west Orange conversions keep a floating puck “for backup.” Trichlor is stabilized. Cyanuric acid does not go away when the puck is gone. It accumulates. UV in May–September over an open Minneola lot is brutal, so some CYA is useful. Too much CYA is how a salt pool tests 4 ppm and still grows mustard algae on the shaded wall of a Stoneybrook West screen cage.

CDC Healthy Swimming materials on hyperchlorination are written for Cryptosporidium in public venues, not for mustard algae. They are still the clearest official statement that stabilizer slows chlorine, and that high CYA makes a “shock” theatrical. UF/IFAS HE887 still says not to empty the shell as a lifestyle. Partial dilution is not the same as draining the pool onto the groundwater and hoping the gunite survives July.

Sun, screens, and two counties

NOAA 1991–2020 mean maximum temperatures at MCO reach 92.0 °F in July and 91.6 in August. UV is not printed on that normals table, but anyone who has walked Plant Street at 2 p.m. in June knows the bleach-the-towel version. Horizon West and Hamlin, with young trees, behave like solar collectors. Windermere oak canopy cuts the bill and adds pollen. Clermont and Minneola sit on Lake County hills; wind on a ridge can change evaporation without changing the county’s appetite for afternoon storms.

Screen enclosures — standard on Stoneybrook West and Waterleigh — reduce UV and leaves. They also hide neglect. A salt cell on “low” all summer inside a cage will still lose to a week of rain plus sunscreen plus a tripped GFCI. Weekly service exists because the box on the wall is not a manager.

What weekly salt care looks like on this map

On a salt pool care visit we expect to test salt, free chlorine, pH, and CYA on a sensible cadence; add acid as pH creeps; brush the finish (salt does not exempt you from biofilm on steps); empty baskets; and look at the cell without pretending to be the warranty department. If the cell is at end of life, the note will say so. Repair is a different trade.

New Horizon West builder options are often salt from day one. Older Ocoee and Windermere pools are conversions. The chemistry target is the same. The failure modes differ: a 2004 copper heat sink versus a 2022 plastic manifold. We will not quote either repair here.

Snowbirds: UF/IFAS Closing Your Seasonal Home (FCS3154/HE887) still wants chemistry every 7–10 days and no draining. A salt system left off at the breaker for six months is a green pool with a $1,200 cell waiting for scale. Put travel dates on the vacant and snowbird form. If it is saltwater, why do I still smell chlorine some days?

Because it is chlorine. Combined chlorine (chloramines) smells harsher than a clean residual. That is a test-kit problem, not proof the cell is “too strong.”

Can I mix trichlor pucks with a salt system?

You can. You will add CYA every time. Many west Orlando greens after a “I thought pucks would help” summer are that decision. Unstabilized chlorine is the usual way to raise residual without stacking stabilizer.

Does salt mean less weekly service?

Will you clean the cell?

Inspecting and noting scale is part of care. Acid-washing a cell is a manufacturer-specific procedure and is easy to void. We will not turn this page into a repair manual.

Is salt safer for a snowbird house?

Only if someone is still testing. UF/IFAS did not write a salt exemption. Empty-house care is still 7–10 days.
