Well Water Iron Rust Stains on Central Florida Pool Decks and Waterlines
Well water and irrigation iron leave rust stains on Central Florida pool decks and waterlines. Why 0.3 ppm stains, and what pool care can (and cannot) do.
Orange fans on a Winter Garden deck that match the sprinkler arc are not “dirty concrete.” They are iron. So is the rust-colored ring at the tile line after someone topped the pool off from a well, and the tea-colored water that looked fine in the hose and stained the pebble overnight. UF/IFAS EDIS SL 265/SS487, Dealing with Iron and Other Micro-Irrigation Plugging Problems, puts the chemistry in writing: iron is common in Florida’s sandy soils and shallow groundwater; when irrigation water carries more than 0.3 ppm iron, staining and scaling conditions exist. A review cited there of southwest Florida groundwater found iron from 0.1 to 7.0 ppm.

Why does well water leave orange rust stains in Florida?
SS487’s iron section is the primary source worth stealing. Iron in groundwater is often in the soluble ferrous form (Fe2+) because aquifer water is low in oxygen. Pump it into air — a sprinkler, a hose into a pool, a leaking emitter — and it oxidizes to ferric iron (Fe3+), which is barely soluble and drops out as rust-colored scale. The same publication notes the conversion is fast when pH is high. Florida limestone aquifers often produce alkaline water; at pH 8.0, SS487’s table says the ferrous-to-ferric conversion in the presence of oxygen can take on the order of 30 seconds. At pH 7.0, about an hour. At pH 6.0, about 100 hours. That is why a clear hose stream becomes an orange fan on the deck before lunch.
The U.S. EPA’s secondary drinking-water standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L (0.3 ppm). That is an aesthetic guideline, not a health MCL. EPA lists the noticeable effects above that level: rusty color, sediment, metallic taste, and reddish or orange staining. Florida DEP publishes the same secondary level for iron, 0.3 mg/L. UF/IFAS and EPA are describing the same threshold from two directions: irrigation plugging and drinking-water aesthetics. Your pool deck does not care which document you read.
Is that rust on the waterline or just dirt?
Dirt brushes off. Iron does not, or not for long. A waterline ring that is orange-brown, worse under a return or where a hose dumped, is the usual well-water fingerprint. A gray or tan scum line can be organics and oils — still a brushing job on weekly pool service, not the same metal. Green or mustard films are algae; see the mustard-algae and green pool recovery pages rather than treating every stain as rust.
Irrigation stains on the deck often draw a perfect arc that matches a Hunter or Rain Bird head aimed at the screen. Clermont and Minneola well lots see this. So do some Horizon West and Hamlin properties that still have a well for the lawn even when the house is on city water. City fill is not a guarantee of zero metals, but the classic orange fan in west Orlando is well or untreated irrigation.
Can I fill or top off the pool with well water?
You can. You will import whatever is dissolved in it. Iron that was invisible in the aquifer can oxidize in the bowl, stain plaster and pebble, and eat chlorine while it does. CDC Healthy Swimming still wants a free-chlorine residual and pH 7.0–7.8 in a home pool; metal load is extra chlorine demand and extra staining risk, not a substitute for sanitizer. FAC 64E-9.004 is a public-pool rule, but its insistence on measured chemistry is the right instinct: test what you just added.
UF/IFAS Extension Indian River County’s Pools and Hurricanes article, citing the EDIS reclaimed-water FAQ, also advises not to fill a pool with reclaimed water. Reclaimed is not well water, but the lesson is the same: the hose is not automatically “pool water.” Prefer potable fill when you can. If the well is the only source, sequestering and testing are part of care, not a promise the tile will stay white.
How do I stop sprinklers from staining the deck?
Aim the heads off the cage, the coping, and the water. That is landscaping, and we are not the landscaper. SS487’s agricultural fixes — sedimentation ponds, chlorination-plus-filtration, chelating agents, citric acid — are written for micro-irrigation systems, not for a backyard pool company to install. Homeowners with a staining well often add an irrigation sequestering feeder or an iron filter. That is a water-treatment or irrigation contractor. Say that plainly.
What a pool tech can do as cleaning and care:
- Keep the waterline brushed so new metal does not bake on every week.
- Test the pool water, not just the well, and use a sequestering product labeled for swimming pools when iron is already in the bowl — following the label, not a website recipe.
- Avoid shocking in a way that dumps oxidizer onto a heavy metal load without a plan; oxidized iron is what stains. A tech who sees this weekly in Winter Garden and Clermont will say so.
- Tell you if the fill source is the problem. We will not pretend a capful of sequesterant fixes a 2 ppm well forever.
What can pool care actually do about iron stains?
On the water: test, sequester, brush, hold sanitizer, and stop adding untreated well water if a better fill exists. On the finish: light, fresh staining sometimes yields to care. Old, baked-in metal in pebble may need an acid or stain product a surface pro uses — which is not us. We do not resurface, acid-wash as a contractor, or “guarantee white tile.” On the deck: rust removers and pressure washing are outside pool cleaning. Hire that trade if you want the pavers orange-free.
If the pool is also green, recover the water first. Metals and algae can coexist; they are not the same visit. If you want a local tech on the water, use the form. We match homeowners. We do not become your well contractor on the way through.

Does well water stain a saltwater pool worse?
Salt does not cancel iron. You can still oxidize metals in a salt system, and the cell does not filter rust. See salt pool care for the sanitizer side. Treat iron as a fill-water problem either way.
Will chlorine or shock remove rust stains from the waterline?
Oxidizer often makes dissolved iron drop out of solution, which can worsen staining if metals are already in the water. Sequester first when a test shows iron, then follow the product label. Do not “shock it and see” on a well-filled bowl.
Is the orange ring a health hazard?
EPA’s 0.3 mg/L iron figure is a secondary, aesthetic standard — rusty color and staining — not a primary health MCL. CDC’s swimming concern is still sanitizer and pH. Staining is ugly. A zero chlorine residual is the health problem.
