Calcium Scale on Tile in Hard Central Florida Water: Test, Brush, Notice

Calcium scale on pool tile in hard Central Florida water is white crust, not rust. Test, brush, and notice it — we do not acid-wash or descale as a trade.

White, crusty scale on the tile line of a Clermont pool is not rust, not dirt, and not “the finish wearing out overnight.” It is calcium. Central Florida sits on limestone. Fill water, irrigation overspray, and high pH take dissolved calcium and magnesium out of solution and leave a rough, chalky band where water meets air. This is not the iron article. Orange fans on the deck, a rust ring under a well hose, and tea-colored fill are metals oxidizing. That chemistry is already written as well-water iron rust stains on Central Florida pool decks and waterlines. Calcium scale is pale. It feels like sandpaper or dried mortar on the tile. Brushing does not make it orange. If your stain is orange, stop reading this page and use that one.

Why is Central Florida water hard in the first place?

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. UF/IFAS EDIS ENH1352/EP616, How to Properly Read Your Irrigation Water Analysis for Turf and Landscape, puts the irrigation numbers in writing because Florida landscapers live with the same aquifer homeowners fill pools from. Desired hardness for irrigation water is 50 to 150 ppm. Very hard water above 300 ppm can leave foliar deposits, damage irrigation systems, and clog pipes. Carbonates and bicarbonates can react with calcium and magnesium and form insoluble products — the chalk you then see on a leaf, an emitter, or a tile line.

That is an irrigation document. We will not pretend it is a pool-tile code. It is the honest local explanation of why a Clermont well, a south Lake irrigation head, or a hard municipal fill leaves mineral behind. EP616 also notes that alkalinity is buffering capacity, not merely “pH over 7.” A pool that keeps drifting up is often that water, not a mystery additive.

The U.S. EPA’s secondary drinking-water standards are aesthetic guidelines, not health MCLs, and they do not publish a hardness SMCL. What they do publish, and what actually applies, is total dissolved solids at 500 mg/L, with noticeable effects above that level listed as hardness, deposits, colored water, staining, and salty taste. High pH (the SMCL range is 6.5–8.5) is listed with deposits. EPA defines scale as a mineral deposit on pipes and heaters. Do not upgrade those sentences into a pool calcium target EPA never wrote.

What does calcium scale look like on pool tile?

On a Clermont waterline it is usually a white to tan crust on the tile and grout at splash height, worse on the side that sees sun and aeration from a return. It can look like dried salt, but salt crust redissolves. Calcium carbonate does not, or not with a polite wipe. Run a fingernail across it. Scale is hard. Biofilm is slimy. Iron is orange. Mustard algae is yellow dust that clouds when you brush and resettles.

Ocoee’s older plaster pools collect the same band. Ridge lots in Clermont and Minneola add wind and irrigation overspray onto coping. City fill is not a guarantee of soft water in a limestone state. A well used for the lawn while the house is on city water is a common split; the sprinkler arc on the tile is still a fill-water problem.

Does high pH make scale worse?

Yes. Calcium carbonate comes out of solution as pH and temperature climb. CDC Healthy Swimming wants pH 7.0–7.8 in a home pool because that band balances germ kill, pipe life, and swimmer comfort. As pH goes up — especially above 8.0 — chlorine’s ability to kill germs drops. The scale problem is the same drift from another direction: a pool that sits at 8.2 is a poor sanitizer and a good mineral precipitator. FAC 64E-9.004, a public-pool rule, holds pH at 7.0–7.8 and requires a test kit that can measure calcium hardness along with chlorine, pH, and alkalinity. Residential yards are not inspected to that code. Measuring calcium hardness is still the right instinct. We will not invent a backyard ppm target that 64E-9.004 does not print.

What can weekly pool care actually do about scale?

Test. Brush. Notice. That is the honest list.

  • Test pH and keep it in the CDC 7.0–7.8 band so chlorine works and you are not feeding precipitation on purpose. Test calcium hardness when the kit supports it, especially after a well top-off or a season of heavy evaporation and refill.
  • Brush the tile line every visit. Fresh, thin film is the only scale brushing reliably slows. Old, baked crust on grout is already a surface condition.
  • Note what you see. “Scale on the east tile, worse under the return” is useful. “We will acid-wash it next week” is not something this company will say, because we do not acid-wash as a trade.
  • Stop making it worse. Irrigation heads aimed at the cage and fill from an untreated hard well thicken the band. A scaled salt cell is equipment. The tech can write it down. We do not descale or replace cells. For sanitizer and stabilizer on salt systems, use saltwater pools in west Orlando.

What weekly care will not do: acid-wash the shell, grind tile, promise white grout, install a softener, or treat a heater’s scaled exchanger. Those are other contractors. A sequestering product labeled for swimming pools can be part of water care when a test shows high hardness — follow the label. Sequestering is not a descale.

If the pool is also green, recover the water first. If the pump is down, stop. Weekly pool service is how someone who sees a dozen waterlines a week notices the band while it is still a film.

How do I keep scale from taking over the tile?

Hold pH. Do not run the pool as an alkaline spa because the water “feels fine.” Evaporation on a Clermont ridge in summer concentrates whatever was dissolved; refill adds more. That is why a weekly test beats a quarterly panic. A tile line you never brush is how a film becomes crust. You cannot dose around a band you refuse to touch.

Softening the fill is a water-treatment decision, not a pool-route decision. EP616’s irrigation advice is to remediate hardness only when it is causing visible problems. Is white scale the same as the orange rust on my deck?

No. Orange is typically iron from well or irrigation water. White, hard crust on tile is calcium carbonate from hard water and high pH. Different chemistry, different page. Do not treat scale with a rust remover you bought for pavers.
