Salt pool care
A saltwater pool in Winter Garden is still a chlorine pool. The salt cell makes hypochlorous acid from dissolved salt. It does not exempt you from testing, brushing, or the UV that NOAA’s Central Florida summers throw at an uncovered freeform. What changes is how pH, stabilizer, and calcium behave week to week — and how fast a neglected cell scales in our hard-ish well water.

What weekly salt care watches
- Salt level in the range the manufacturer printed on the box — typically around 3,000 ppm, not ocean water
- pH climb (salt generation tends to push pH up; acid is routine, not a failure)
- Free chlorine residual at the far end of the pool, not only next to the returns
- Cyanuric acid, because many owners still toss in trichlor pucks “for backup” and over-stabilize
- Calcium and scale on the cell plates, especially after a dry spring when evaporation concentrates minerals
Florida public-pool rule 64E-9.004 caps cyanuric acid at 100 mg/L and recommends 40 mg/L. The CDC Model Aquatic Health Code treats water with stabilizer as needing a higher free-chlorine floor (2.0 ppm vs 1.0 ppm without CYA). Those documents are written for public venues. They are still the honest numbers to aim at in a backyard salt pool that children use after a Hamlin soccer practice.
Why salt is not “low maintenance” here
West Orlando has two climates in one year. NOAA 1991–2020 normals at MCO show a dry-ish November (1.79 inches) and a soaked June (8.05 inches). In the dry stretch, water evaporates, salt concentrates, and pH drifts. In the wet stretch, rain dilutes salt and chlorine together; the cell cannot invent sanitizer if conductivity is out of range or the breaker was off for a storm. Screen enclosures in Stoneybrook West cut some UV; open pools in new Minneola tracts cut none of it.

FAQs
Do you repair salt cells?
No. If the cell is at end of life, the weekly tech can say so. Repair and replacement are outside this site.
Can a salt pool still go green?
Yes. A cell that is off, scaled, or starved of salt produces no chlorine. Then it is a green pool like any other.
Is salt gentler on plaster?
Salt water is still saline. pH control and calcium matter more than the marketing. We will not claim a medical or surface warranty.
