When to Rescreen a West Orlando Pool Cage (and When a Patch Is Enough)

A torn bay in a Winter Garden pool cage is not automatically a full rescreen, and a strip of tape is not automatically a repair. If the rest of the fiberglass still has give, one panel after a dog, a ladder, or a limb is a patch. If every wall chalks in your hand, you are buying time, not mesh. When is a patch enough on a west Orlando pool cage?

A patch is honest when three things are true at once.

• The tear is local — one bay, a kicked kick-plate, a cat hole at the waterline in Stoneybrook West — not a roof already mapped with pinholes.
• The surrounding mesh still flexes. Pinch a panel away from the tear. If it springs back instead of dusting, new spline will hold.
• The aluminum is still in plane. Posts plumb, the door still meets the latch. Mesh cannot square a racked frame.

Patches fail when you treat a brittle cage as a single hole. UV-rotted 18×14 does not take spline the way new cloth does. You stretch a pretty rectangle next to a wall that will split on the next Hamlin afternoon cell. That is a second trip, not thrift.

A screen-door closer that no longer self-closes is panel-adjacent work, not a whole-cage rescreen. If that door is how you keep a toddler off the deck, it is more urgent than cosmetics. It is still not every bay.

When should you rescreen the whole cage?

Rescreen the cloth when the cloth is what failed:

• Multiple walls show the same chalk, fade, and pinholes. Roof panels go first in full sun; lower walls go first where dogs and furniture rub.
• Spline pulls out of the groove because the mesh has no tensile strength left.
• You are replacing the third “one bay” this year on the same Waterleigh or Horizon West enclosure.
• You want a different weave — 20×20 or no-see-um — on an existing frame. Mixing leftover brittle 18×14 with new cloth is two jobs.

That is still mesh on an existing aluminum frame, not a new cage. New cages, layout changes, and beam swaps are a different trade. For the matching offer, use screen and lanai repair.

What does a rescreen visit actually include?

Pull old spline, measure the opening, stretch new fiberglass or polyester mesh, reset spline. Replace a single torn bay when the rest of the cloth can take it. Full-cage rescreen when the mesh is the failed part. Closer, latch, and kick-plate when the door no longer self-closes. The weekly pool tech can note the hole. Screen work is a separate request so the person who shows up carries spline.

Does a torn screen fail Florida’s pool barrier rules?

Only if you are counting on the enclosure as the barrier — and this website is not a building department. Florida’s Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, section 515.27, says a new residential pool must have at least one listed safety feature. One option is an enclosure that meets section 515.29. Others include an approved safety cover, exit alarms, self-closing doors from the house, or a pool alarm that meets ASTM F2208. A screen cage is not automatically the legal barrier.

If the cage is the enclosure you are using, 515.29 is the opening language. A residential swimming pool barrier must be at least four feet high on the outside. It may not have gaps, openings, indentations, protrusions, or structural components that could allow a young child to crawl under, squeeze through, or climb over the barrier. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with the release on the pool side where a young child cannot reach it over the top or through a gap.

A toddler-sized tear at deck height, or a door that no longer latches, is not cosmetics if that cage is your barrier. We will not certify the enclosure. We will match a tech who can close the hole. A licensed contractor and a permit drawing are a different hire — not a mesh-only visit sold as a legal inspection.

Do I need a permit to rescreen in Winter Garden?

We will not invent a ZIP-code answer. Mesh-only replacement on an unchanged frame is often treated as maintenance. Changes to members, anchors, height, or footprint are often treated as structural work. Orange County’s permitting pages list screen structures among work types that go through building permitting for new and accessory construction. That is not a Winter Garden mesh permit and not a Clermont exemption. Confirm the actual job with the department that covers the address: Winter Garden, Ocoee, Oakland, or unincorporated Orange County; Clermont, Minneola, or Lake County Building Services across the county line.
