Trichlor pucks are convenient. In a Winter Garden backyard they are also how cyanuric acid (CYA) climbs until free chlorine still “shows up” on a strip and barely sanitizes. Trichlor is stabilized chlorine: each puck brings chlorine and CYA. CYA does not evaporate. Florida sun makes owners reach for more pucks. That is the loop, not a mystery disease called “chlorine lock.”

What does a trichlor puck actually add?
Trichloro-s-triazinetrione is chlorine plus cyanuric acid in one tablet. A floater or feeder gives you a slow residual. It also leaves stabilizer behind after the chlorine is gone. Unstabilized liquid chlorine and calcium hypochlorite add chlorine without stacking CYA. A salt cell makes hypochlorous acid from dissolved salt and adds no CYA of its own. That is why a salt pool that “still uses pucks for backup” is often the one with the highest stabilizer on the route.
CYA is useful outdoors. It shields chlorine from ultraviolet light so a residual can last through a west Orange afternoon. The CDC’s home-pool page lists sunlight among the things that reduce chlorine. The Florida Climate Center’s 1991–2020 normals at Orlando International Airport put July and August mean temperatures at 82.6°F, with average highs of 92.0°F and 91.6°F. What does CDC say when cyanuric acid is in the water?
CDC Healthy Swimming tells residential owners to keep pH at 7.0–7.8 and a chlorine concentration of at least 1 ppm in pools. If you are using cyanuric acid, a chlorine stabilizer, or chlorine products that contain it — CDC names dichlor and trichlor on the product label — that floor rises to at least 2 ppm. CDC also notes that published kill times for common germs are for water without cyanuric acid, and that disinfection times are longer when CYA is present.
That is the public-health floor, not a marketing range. A strip that reads 1.0 ppm of free chlorine in a heavily stabilized pool is below CDC’s own CYA-adjusted number. CDC wants chlorine and pH checked at least twice a day on a home pool. A professional visit does not replace every glance at a kit if people are swimming. It does catch the stabilizer number most owners never test.
What is Florida’s CYA cap — and does it apply to my backyard?
Florida Administrative Code 64E-9.004 is written for public swimming pools, not a private living-unit pool. It is still the honest local rulebook techs borrow. The operational-requirements rule caps cyanuric acid at 100 mg/L in pools, recommends 40 mg/L as a maximum, and caps spa pools at 40 mg/L. pH is 7.0–7.8. Conventional public pools keep free chlorine from 1 to 10 mg/L. Orange County is not inspecting your spa on Tuesday. Treat 100 mg/L as a ceiling you do not want to discover after the water has already gone dull. Treat 40 mg/L as the recommended maximum, not as a target to overshoot because the feeder was easy.
What people mean by “CYA lock”
“Chlorine lock” is not a certified diagnosis. In the field it usually means CYA so high that a normal free-chlorine dose is sluggish, or pH so high that chlorine is a weak sanitizer even when the test looks acceptable. CDC is explicit that as pH goes up, chlorine’s ability to kill germs decreases, especially above 8.0. A salt system that drifts high in pH plus a summer of trichlor is a common Winter Garden combination.
The water can test for free chlorine and still grow a film on the steps. Recovery then takes more brush work and more filter time — which is green pool recovery, not another puck in the skimmer. Do not drain as a first move. UF/IFAS Closing Your Seasonal Home (FCS3154/HE887) tells Florida owners not to empty a shell: sun can crack it, and groundwater pressure after heavy rain can damage an empty pool. Lowering CYA, when it is actually needed, is a measured partial drain-and-fill after you know the number.
Why salt pools still get over-stabilized
A salt cell does not add CYA. Owners still toss tablets “so it doesn’t go green while we’re at the beach.” Every tablet is more stabilizer. The cell keeps making chlorine; the CYA keeps climbing; the apparent residual stops behaving. That is why salt-pool care on this site watches cyanuric acid on purpose. Screened lanais in older Winter Garden lots cut some UV. New open water west of SR 429 cuts almost none of it. Neither lot type needs a feeder running trichlor all summer on top of a working cell.
If the cell is scaled, starved of salt, or switched off, you do not have a salt pool that week. Pucks will not fix a dead cell, and we will not replace the cell. A cleaning tech can note a low salt reading or obvious scale. Repair is someone else’s license.
What a weekly visit does about pucks
On a Winter Garden route, cleaning and care means: test free chlorine, pH, and CYA when the kit supports it; dose a working residual without stacking stabilizer for sport; brush; empty baskets; and look at the filter. If the only chlorine in the shed is trichlor, stop using it as the daily source once CYA is already in range. Unstabilized chlorine raises the residual. CYA that is already there keeps doing the UV job. Wet-season rain at Orlando International averages 8.05 inches in June, 7.46 in July, and 7.69 in August. Rain dilutes chlorine. Do trichlor pucks cause cyanuric acid lock in Florida pools?
They add CYA every time they dissolve. In Florida sun that convenience becomes a pile-up: chlorine tests present, sanitizing power is slow. CDC wants at least 2 ppm free chlorine when trichlor or other CYA products are in use. FAC 64E-9.004 caps public-pool CYA at 100 mg/L and recommends 40. Stop stacking pucks; test CYA; dilute only if the number is actually high.
Can I keep using pucks in a Winter Garden saltwater pool?

Is 100 ppm CYA illegal in my backyard?
64E-9.004 is a public-pool rule. Your private pool is not under that inspection regime. The 100 mg/L cap and 40 mg/L recommended maximum are still the numbers Florida wrote down because chlorine slows as stabilizer climbs. Treat them as a ceiling.
