Third, timing. A single morning reading only shows residual before peak sun. By mid-afternoon the same pool can sit below a useful free chlorine floor even if the pump ran all day. How do cyanuric acid and free chlorine interact in Florida sun?
Cyanuric acid (CYA), often called stabilizer or conditioner, is the sunscreen for chlorine in outdoor pools. Without enough CYA, free chlorine burns off quickly under subtropical UV. With CYA in the water, chlorine lasts longer in the sun—but a larger share of that free chlorine is tied up in equilibrium with the stabilizer, so disinfection is slower if you chase yesterday’s numbers.
CDC’s residential guidance reflects that tradeoff: when cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine products (dichlor or trichlor on the label) are in use, CDC recommends free chlorine of at least 2 ppm in pools, with pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Stabilizer is not “set and forget.” Trichlor pucks and some shock products add CYA every time you dose.
